Cross-border QRIS: foreign tourists now pay with their own apps

A tourist from Singapore, Japan or Korea can now scan your QRIS code and pay with the wallet or bank app from their own country. This is cross-border QRIS (QRIS Antarnegara), and it is growing fast.

How a tourist pays with QRIS: scan, pay with a home-country app, currency converted, merchant receives rupiah

The latest figures

Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta shared these numbers in late September 2026, covering the period from the launch in 2022 to August 2026:

Direction Transactions Value
Inbound (foreign visitors paying in Indonesia) 17.8 million Rp6.20 trillion
Outbound (Indonesians paying abroad) about 5 million Rp1.85 trillion
Total about 22.8 million about Rp8.05 trillion

Inbound spending is more than three times outbound. In other words, cross-border QRIS brings more money into Indonesian shops than it takes out.

Which countries are connected

Six countries are connected today: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea and China. Bank Indonesia has also signed agreements with Hong Kong and Timor-Leste to build payment links, but those links are not live yet.

How it works for the merchant

  1. The visitor scans your normal QRIS code.
  2. They pay with their home app, in their own currency.
  3. The payment networks convert the currency.
  4. You receive the payment in rupiah, like any other QRIS payment.

You do not need a separate code or a foreign bank account.

What this means for merchants

  • Tourism areas benefit first. Shops, cafés, hotels and tour sellers in places such as Bali see the most foreign QRIS payments.
  • Show the QRIS logo clearly. Visitors from connected countries look for it.
  • Online shops selling abroad may prefer other methods for customers outside these six countries. For international customers, a stablecoin such as USDT is one option. Read QRIS or USDT: which should you offer.
