What is a payment gateway? Meaning, how it works and how to choose

Every online shop that takes payments uses a payment gateway, even if the customer never sees its name. Here is what it is and why it matters.

Meaning

A payment gateway is a service that sits between your checkout and the payment networks (banks, e-wallets, QRIS, card networks or blockchains). It creates the payment, confirms that the money really arrived, tells your system, and passes the money on to you.

Without one, you would have to connect to every bank yourself, or check every transfer by hand.

How a payment flows through a gateway

What a payment gateway does: creates the payment, confirms it, notifies your system and settles the money

  1. Your website asks the gateway to create a payment for an order, for example a QRIS code.
  2. The customer pays with their bank or e-wallet app.
  3. The gateway confirms the payment with the network and sends your system a webhook, so the order is marked paid automatically.
  4. The money is settled to you and can be withdrawn to your account.

Why businesses use a payment gateway

  • More ways to pay through one integration instead of many.
  • Automatic confirmation, so no more checking transfer screenshots. See how to stop fake transfer receipts.
  • One record of every payment, fee and withdrawal for your finance team.
  • Security: API keys, signed webhooks and two-factor sign-in protect your money and data.

Payment gateway vs payment method

QRIS, bank transfer or USDT are payment methods: the ways a customer pays. The gateway is the service that lets your website accept those methods. One gateway usually offers several methods.

How to choose one

Look at the methods your customers use, the sandbox for testing, how webhooks are signed and retried, when money is settled, and exactly what is charged. Our buyer's guide to choosing a payment API goes through each point.

PAYWISE in short

PAYWISE is an API-first payment gateway for QRIS and USDT (BEP20): one REST API, signed webhooks, a free sandbox, and withdrawals to your bank account or BEP20 wallet. Create an account to try it in the sandbox.
